Sunday night Red Sox and Yankees starters had trouble but Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka managed to get to the 5th inning while Yankees starter Phil Hughes could only get to the 3rd inning. Even though he struggled, Matsuzaka got the win and is now 3-0. He pitched 5 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 earned runs, striking out 2, and walking 6. Yankees' Hughes pitched 2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 7 runs (6 earned), striking out 3, and walking 3. Red Sox' Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury each had 2 RBIs.

In the 9th inning, Red Sox reliever Javier Lopez got Bobby Abreu out, and then Terry Francona brought in Manny Delcarmen. Delcarmen struck out Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui grounded out to second to end the game.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz got the day off as he is struggling this season, going only 3 for 43, the worst start he has had in his career. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter did not play in this game as well. The final score was 8-5.

The Red Sox now lead the season series 2-1. The next time these two teams meet is on Wednesday, April 16th.
