Rivera survives 9th for Yankees win

Despite the Red Sox losing today's game 2-1 to the Yankees, it was a good game to watch. It came down to the 9th inning, as Mariano Rivera allowed a run to make it 2-1, and then he got out of a bases loaded jam to get his 23rd save of the season. Rivera did get help from the home plate umpire as some pitches looked to be balls and not strikes. Yankees starter Mike Mussina also got some calls his way, as he pitched 6 innings, allowed 4 hits, 0 runs, had 5 strikeouts, and 1 walk. Mussina got the win and is now 11-6. Red Sox starter Justin Masterson pitched 6 innings, allowed 6 hits, allowed 2 runs, had 2 strikeouts, and 2 walks. Masterson is now 4-3 this season.

Wild play helps Red Sox and hurts Damon

Yesterday was the 4th of July and it was also George Steinbrunner's birthday so something weird had to happen, right? And so there was something weird. In the 3rd inning, Red Sox Kevin Youkilis hit a line drive that Yankees Johnny Damon caught in his glove but then he crashed into the wall and the ball bounced on top of the outfield wall and sat there for a second and then landed back inside the park for it to still be a fair/live ball and not a home run. Youkilis ended up with a 2-run triple, while Damon came out of the game with a sprained and bruised left shoulder. You can watch the video of this crazy play below. In the 5th inning, Mike Lowell hit a 3-run home run to give the Red Sox the lead that they would need to win the game. The final score was 6-4 Red Sox. Yankees starter Darrell Rasner pitched 5 innings, allowed 10 hits, 6 runs, had 2 strikeouts, and 3 walks. Beckett got the win and is now 8-5, while Rasner got the loss and is 4-7.
