This is the Red Sox vs Yankees My Notes Archived From 2006 Season page.

Posted on 09/25/06

I was away the past two weeks so I missed the final Red Sox vs Yankees series with the two double-headers. The Red Sox won this last 4-game series 3-1. But this series didn't have much meaning as the Red Sox had a slim chance of getting back into the race for the wild card. We'll have to wait for next season to see the next series between the Red Sox and Yankees. The Yankees won the season series 11-8 against the Red Sox this season.

NY Post: DEREK & GOLIATHWell the New York papers and media are having fun with David Ortiz's comments about Derek Jeter and the MVP race and they're making a big deal about it. According to a New York Post article by George King, David Ortiz said about Derek Jeter, "'Don't get me wrong, he's a great player but he's got a lot of guys in that lineup,' the Boston DH said. 'Top to bottom, you've got a guy who can hurt you. Come hit in this lineup, see how good you can be.'" According to the article, David Ortiz said, "'If I get 50 home runs and 10 more RBIs, that's going to be a number no one else in the American League will have,' Ortiz said. 'But they'll vote for a position player, use that as an excuse. They're talking about Jeter a lot, right? He's done a great job, but Jeter is not a 40-homer hitter or an RBI guy. It doesn't matter how much you've done for your ballclub, the bottom line is, the guy who hits 40 home runs and knocks in 100, that's the guy you know helped your team win games.'" That doesn't sound like David Ortiz to me. Even Johnny Damon said that that doesn't sound like Ortiz. So did the media take him out of context? Well today David Ortiz in the pre-game show with Jerry Remy basically said that the media (especially the New York media) have been twisting his words and spreading stuff that he didn't say, and he has nothing but good to say about Derek Jeter. During the game Jerry Remy said that Terry Francona and David Ortiz were trying to get in contact with Derek Jeter to set things straight but they weren't able to as of yet. So expect this Friday's game at Yankee Stadium, for the New York fans to boo David Ortiz when he comes to the plate. The image to the left was today's back page of the New York Post.

Boston Massacre 2006Game 5 Summary
It sure is the Boston Massacre of 2006. The Yankees have swept the Red Sox in their 5-game series. The Yankees won today's game 2-1. David Wells (now 2-3) pitched well in 7.1 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, had 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Cory Lidle (now 2-2) pitched 6 innings, allowed 3 hits, had 5 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Kyle Farnsworth got the save, his second save of the season. The winning run came from a Keith Foulke wild pitch and Nick Green scored from third base.

ESPN.com is reporting that Red Sox pitcher David Wells cleared waivers on August 3rd, so that means that the Red Sox can trade him to any team that they want to. If they do trade him, then it's basically the Red Sox saying we are re-tooling for next season.

Curt SchillingGame 4 Summary
The Yankees came away with another win against the Red Sox, this time 8-5 in extra innings. In the top of the ninth, with two outs, a runner on third base, Derek Jeter was at the plate. On the second pitch to him from Papelbon, he blooped a single into right field to tie the game 5-5. The game went into extra innings and Jason Giambi (steroid user) hit a solo home run and then Jorge Posada hit a two-run home run. And that was it, the Yankees have won four straight against the Red Sox.

Curt Schilling pitched 7 innings, allowed 6 hits, 3 runs, had 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts. Jonathan Papelbon had to come into the game in the eighth innings because no other Red Sox pitcher could get anyone out. So Papelbon pitched 2 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 run, had one walk, and 5 strikeouts. Craig Hansen got the loss (now 1-1), he pitched 1 inning, allowed 3 hits, 3 runs, and had 2 strikeouts. Mike Mussina pitched 4 innings (had to leave early due to his groin), allowed 7 hits, 3 runs, and had 2 strikeouts. Mariano Rivera got the win (now 5-5), he pitched 2 innings, allowed 2 hits, had 2 walks, and 1 strikeouts. As for hitting, Jason Giambi (the steroid user) had the big hits. He hit two home runs (gee I wonder how he did that? Maybe with some help from steroids?) and had 5 RBIs. For the Red Sox, David Ortiz hit a home run (his 44th of the season) and he went 3 for 6.

Robinson CanoGame 3 Summary
The Yankees won their third straight game against the Red Sox in another high scoring game, this time it was 13-5. Bernie Williams started the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. Manny Ramirez hit a three-run home run to tie the game 3-3 in the fourth inning. The big hit of the game was by Jorge Posada, when he hit a three-run triple in the sixth inning to make the score 10-5 Yankees. In the eighth inning, Robinson Cano hit a three-run home run to put the game away.

Johnny Damon had another big game, going 3 for 6 with 1 RBI. Josh Becktt (who is now 13-8) had another bad outing, pitching only 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits, nine runs, had nine walks, two strikeouts, and allowed another home run. Randy Johnson (who is now 14-9) pitched seven innings, allowed four hits, five runs, had six walks, and three strikeouts.

Derek JeterPosted at 1:00AM, Game 2 Summary
The Yankees won the second game of the double-header 14-11. The Red Sox started the scoring with Manny Ramirez hitting a single that scored David Ortiz in the first inning. In the fourth inning Johnny Damon hit a two-run home run to make it 7-5 Yankees. In the seventh inning Derek Jeter got the big hit, with a 3-run double which made it 11-10 Yankees. After that, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano got RBI hits which made it 14-10. In the bottom of the ninth David Ortiz hit a solo home run off of Mariano Rivera but that wasn't enough to come back.

The error brothers (Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter) both made errors. Jeter now has 11 errors and A-Rod has 22 errors. Johnny Damon had another big game, going 3 for 6 with 3 RBIs. Mark Loretta had a good game going 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs. Manny Ramirez went 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Jon Lester pitched 3.2 innings, allowed eight hits, seven runs, had three walks, and four strikeouts. Sidney Ponson pitched 3 innings, allowed nine hits, seven runs, had one walk, and four strikeouts. Mike Timlin got roughed up, pitching only 0.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits. The Red Sox (69-52) are now 3.5 games back from the Yankees (72-48) in the division, and 3 games back in the Wild Card race.

Eric HinskeGame 1 Summary
The Yankees beat the Red Sox 12-4. The Yankees scored first with Jeter hitting a single which scored Johnny Damon in the first inning. In the fifth inning, Damon hit a two-run home run which made the score 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Manny Ramirez hit a solo home run to make it 4-2. The Yankees broke it open in the seventh inning, scoring four runs which made it 8-3.

Jason Johnson pitched 4.1 innings, allowed seven hits, four runs, walked two, and had three strikeouts. Chien-Ming Wang pitched 6 innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, walked four, and had two strikeouts. Eric Hinske had a big first game as a Red Sox, going 3 for 4 with 3 doubles. Johnny Damon had a huge game against his former team, going 3 for 6, with 4 RBIs. Late in the game Rudy Seanez became the sacrificial lamb because the Red Sox were trying to save the other pitchers for Game 2. Seanez walked four batters and allowed four runs (two were earned runs). What really killed the Red Sox in this one was going 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position.

Tomorrow starts the next Red Sox-Yankees season series, and with a double-header to start things off. Game 1 tomorrow (1:05 PM EST) will have Chien-Ming Wang (13-5, 3.84 ERA) vs Jason Johnson (3-11, 6.26 ERA). That pitching matchup definitely favors the Yankees. In Game 2 tomorrow (8:05 PM EST), it will be Sidney Ponson (4-5, 5.82 ERA) vs Jon Lester (6-2, 4.09 ERA). Game 3 on Saturday (1:20 PM EST) will have Randy Johnson (13-9, 4.92) vs Josh Beckett (13-7, 5.02). This one should be interesting with two good pitchers but they both have had their struggles this season. Game 4 on Sunday (8:05 PM EST) will have Mike Mussina (13-5, 3.54) vs Curt Schilling (14-5, 3.83). Game 5 on Monday (1:05 PM EST) will have Cory Lidle (9-9, 4.64) vs David Wells (2-2, 6.06).

It was fun to see Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter make an error together tonight against the Baltimore Orioles. I hope to see it again when they play the Red Sox.

With the Red Sox being 1-5 in their last six games, against bad teams like the Kansas City Royals and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, it will be very interesting when the Red Sox and Yankees play next week on Friday, August 18th. That day there will be a double-header which will be fun for fans. Get your tickets now, these games should be good!

Another Red Sox vs Yankees series starts tomorrow night, and it's a four game series at Yankee Stadium. The pitching match-up for Monday night is Josh Beckett (7-2, 4.46 ERA) vs Mike Mussina (7-1, 2.42 ERA). It should be a good game with these two good pitchers going head to head.

Manny RamirezThe Yankees won the third game of this 3-game series, with the score 8-6. Even with Manny Ramirez hitting two home runs (a two-run shot, and a solo home run) and Kevin Youkilis hitting a two-run home run of his own, the Red Sox couldn't score enough to beat the Yankees. Derek Jeter ended the game with a great defensive play by fielding a ground ball in shallow left field/deep short stop position and jumped and threw to first to get Mike Lowell out at first base. Matt Clement (now 4-4) pitched 4.1 innings, allowed nine hits, eight runs, had four walks, and four strikeouts. He got hit with a ball that was hit by Bernie Williams and since that seemed to be falling off the mound at times when he threw pitches. Randy Johnson (now 6-4) pitched five innings, allowed nine hits, five runs, had two walks, and eight strikeouts. Mariano Rivera got his tenth save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. The next time these two teams will play again is on June 5th.

Alex RodriguezManny Ramirez
The Yankees won game 2 of this 3-game series this week against the Red Sox, 7-5. In the bottom of the seventh, Manny Ramirez hit his own three-run home run, which made the score 7-4 Yankees. In the eighth inning, Ramirez hit a single that scored Kevin Youkilis. Update at 8:15 PM
An article on ESPN.com says that George Steinbrenner left last night's game in the eighth inning and later vented his frustration to reporters. From ESPN.com: “ When asked what he thought of the game, Steinbrenner said, "What did you think of the game?" He then jabbed his fingers at reporters and repeated, "What did you think?" "I'm upset at a lot of them," he said, before adding, "The third baseman." ”

Update at 10:30 PM
David Ortiz hits his 12th home run of the seasonJason Giambi hits his 12th home run of the seasonThe Yankees won game 2 of this series 7-3. NY Post saying the Yankees need to drop Big PapiThe New York Post had this image on the back of their paper saying the Yankees need to drop Big Papi because he has destroyed them over the past few years. Hey Randy, go ahead and try, he'll drop you before you even know it. Better yet, he'll probably take you deep with a home run.

According to a SI.com players poll, the most overrated player in baseball is Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, his teammate third baseman Alex Rodriguez is listed third on the list, and his teammate center fielder Johnny Damon is listed tenth on the list. Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett is listed ninth on the list. As for the most underrated players in baseball list, Red Sox second baseman Mark Loretta is listed fourth on the list. You can view the poll on SI.com.

The second season series between the Red Sox and Yankees starts tonight with the pitching matchup of Josh Beckett vs Randy Johnson. This should be a good one tonight. Beckett is 3-1 with a 4.86 ERA, as Johnson is 5-2 with a 5.02 ERA. It will be Josh Beckett's first start back at Yankee Stadium since his unbelievable pitching performance on October 23, 2003 when he pitched nine innings, only allowing five hits and had nine strikeouts. The Florida Marlins clinched the World Series with that performance by Beckett.

On Wednesday, it will be Curt Schilling (5-1, 3.02 ERA) vs Mike Mussina (5-1, 2.35 ERA). On Thursday, it will be Tim Wakefield (2-4, 3.97 ERA) vs Shawn Chacon (4-1, 3.94 ERA).

Update at 11:15 PM
Josh BeckettRandy JohnsonDon't you just love seeing trash fly by the mound whenever you see a game on television at Yankee Stadium. I guess New Yorkers and Yankee players feel comfortable and at home with trash on the field. Periodically throughout the game I would see a white plastic bag or something fly right by the mound or even behind home plate.

The Red Sox beat the Yankees tonight 14-3. In the first inning, steroid user Jason Giambi hit a two-run home run off Josh Beckett. The trouble for the Yankees started in the third inning when Alex Rodriguez made an error on what looked to be a routine ground ball. After that error, Randy Johnson allowed three runs in the inning. Randy Johnson (3.2 innings pitched, 5 hits, 7 runs, 5 walks, 3 strikeouts) was taken out in the fourth inning after he allowed two more runs (one of those runs came from a David Ortiz RBI double). Aaron Small came in for the Yankees but trouble continued as outfielder Melky Cabrera couldn't catch a fly ball and two more runs scored on that error, which made the score 7-2. In the fifth inning Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run home run off of Aaron Small to make it 10-2. It was Gonzalez's first home run this season (and of course the first home run for him as a member of the Red Sox). In the sixth inning Manny Ramirez hit a solo home run (his sixth of the season) to make the score 11-3. Bernie Williams was ejected from the game after he stuck out for the third time, because he flipped his helmet towards home plate near the home plate umpire. Williams struck out three times against Beckett on questionable third-strike calls. Josh Beckett pitched seven innings, allowed six hits and three runs, and had seven strikeouts.

Yankees fans with a Johnny Damon sign
(Damon has already found fellow idiots)

Tomorrow's game will have Curt Schilling (5-1, 3.02 ERA) vs Mike Mussina (5-1, 2.35 ERA), which should turn into a good pitching match.

Like the Red Sox and Yankees need anymore tension between them, David Wells has to add to it. In an article on BostonHerald.com, it says that when Wells was told that Joe Torre said that he was disappointed in Red Sox fans for booing Johnny Damon on Monday, Wells said, "Awww, poor Joe. Joe's been around a long time. If he's going to have remarks like that, I guess he's getting too sensitive."

Johnny Damon's first game back to Boston was not a good one for him and the Yankees, as they lost 7-3 and Damon went 0 for 4. There were some cheers for Damon as he stepped to the plate for his first at-bat, but soon after all you could hear were boos. Then the rest of the night, you could hear boos when Damon came to the plate. David Ortiz came up with another big hit against the Yankees, hitting a 3-run home run (his 11th) in the eighth inning off of Mike Myers (another former Red Sox), to make the score 7-3. Ortiz went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs. Jonathan Papelbon closed the game (in a non-save situation) with two strikeouts. Read more about Damon's return on RedSox.com. Tomorrow's game will have Josh Beckett (3-1) against Shawn Chacon (3-1).

Doug MirabelliEarlier today the Red Sox pulled off a trade with the San Diego Padres. The Red Sox acquired catcher Doug Mirabelli for cather Josh Bard and pitcher Cla Meredith and either a player to be named later or cash considerations. Welcome back Doug, and the fans showed him their happiness of getting him back, by giving him a standing ovation at his first at-bat. The newest player to join the Red Sox is shortstop Alex Gonzalez. No, not the Alex Gonzalez who played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Alex Gonzalez shortstop who use to play for the Florida Marlins and won the World Series. Alex Gonzalez signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox worth 3 million. He is a good defensive minded shortstop who has some power in his bat but don't look for anything spectacular. From a RedSox article, "Gonzalez batted .264 last season with Florida, with five homers and 45 RBIs. He is a career .245 hitter, with his best season coming in '99 when he batted .277 with 14 homers and a career-best 155 hits."

An article on RedSox.com says that pitcher David Wells will not hold out if a deal isn't done before Spring Training starts.

Are you ready for Spring Training? Well if you're not then take a look at the Fan Guide for the Boston Red Sox. It answers questions such as when the players arrive at camp, when do games start, how to get autographs, and more. Note from that page on RedSox.com: Red Sox pitchers and catchers will report on February 18th and position players will arrive on February 22nd. The first full-squad workout is on February 23rd.

Theo Epstein is back with the Boston Red Sox and back in his former role, General Manager. Theo is officially back with the title and responsibilities of executive vice president/general manager. So what now for Hoyer and Cherington, who shared the roles as general manager while Epstein was away you ask? Well, Hoyer will be assistant general manager and Cherington will be vice president of player personnel.

RedSox.com, ESPN.com, and other sport sites our announcing that the Red Sox released a brief statement that Theo Epstein is returning to the front office of the Boston Red Sox in a full-time baseball operations capacity. The Red Sox will hold a news conference next week to discuss what Epstein's "new" role will be. Will he be helping as a co-GM? Read "Epstein returns to Red Sox front office" article on RedSox.com. Other Red Sox news: the Red Sox signed pitcher Bronson Arroyo to a three-year deal which will be between $11-$12 million (article on RedSox.com). The Red Sox have also signed second baseman/outfielder Willie Harris to a one-year contract, who played for the World Series Champion Chicago White Sox last season (article on RedSox.com). There's a possibility that he could play center field for the Red Sox with the departure of Johnny Damon.

The Boston Red Sox spring training tickets are now on sale. You can view ticket prices, how to order, and the home schedule on RedSox.com. Looking at the Red Sox 2006 Spring Training Schedule, I noticed the Red Sox and Yankees only play each other once, on March 22nd. Get your tickets while you can.

So Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell will now be playing for the Red Sox. The New York Yankees just signed reliever Kyle Farnsworth from the Braves. I expect both of these teams to make more acquisitions. Will Manny Ramirez be traded? We'll have to wait and see.

Josh BeckettMike LowellThe Boston Red Sox look to be making a very big trade soon. Peter Gammons is reporting on ESPN.com that the Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins have a tentative agreed on a trade that would send pitcher Josh Beckett (Yankees fans may remember him from the World Series a few years back when he shut them down) and Gold Glove third baseman Mike Lowell to the Red Sox for shortstop prospect Hanley Ramirez, pitcher prospect Anibal Sanchez, and a minor-league pitcher. The Red Sox have also agreed to take on the $18 million of Lowell's contract for the next two seasons. Last season Josh Beckett was 15-8 with a 3.38 ERA and Mike Lowell hit .236, had 8 home runs, and 58 RBI, and he won the National League third baseman Gold Glove award. I expect bigger numbers in the coming years from these two. If I were the Boston Red Sox I would make this deal definitely. Josh Beckett is a big-time pitcher and with the Red Sox pitching staff as it is now, we need him. Mike Lowell is also a very good player, don't overlook him. Tell us what you think on our blog.
