Alex Rodriguez came up big against the Red Sox, by hitting a solo home run in the top of the 9th inning off of Jonathan Papelbon to give the Yankees the 6-5 lead and Rivera came in to close it out in the 9th inning. The Yankees took this 3-game series by winning two out of three games. The Red Sox and Yankees now don't play until August 28th. The season series is now 7-5 Red Sox.

In tonight's game, Josh Beckett pitched 6.1 innings, allowed 8 hits, 4 runs (all earned), had 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Andy Pettite pitched 4.1 innings, allowed 7 hits, 5 runs (all earned), 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts. Yankees' pitcher Brian Bruney got the win and is now 2-1 this season, while Papelbon got the loss and is now 0-1 this season. Red Sox rookie second baseman Dustin Pedroia had a good game, going 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs. But of course the biggest hit was A-Rod's home run in the 9th inning. Now we have a while before these two teams meet again this season.

Mike Lowell knocks down Robinson CanoGame 2 of the 3-game series was a hard fought game and it turned out to be a battle of the bullpens with the Red Sox' bullpen pitching better. The Red Sox won 11-6 and Mike Lowell was player of the game with some big hits, and not just from his bat. Lowell went 3 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. He also layed out two Yankees players with hits, by knocking down Robinson Cano in the basepath and running into first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz because Jeter's bad throw to first. After the game Cano said about the knockdown of him by Lowell, "I never had a problem with him before. Today he threw his elbow." Cano is trying to make this bigger than what it was. There was really no elbow thrown at Cano by Lowell. Looking at the replay, at the end Lowell's elbow looks to slightly touch Cano, but nothing like Alex Rodriguez's elbow to Dustin Pedroia.

Curt Schilling pitched 5 innings, allowed 9 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. Hideki Okajima picked up the win and is 1-0. Mike Mussina pitched 5 innings, allowed 9 hits, 5 runs (all earned), 4 walks, and 1 strikeouts. Scott Proctor got the loss and is now 0-3 this season.

Tomorrow's pitching matchup will be Josh Beckett (8-0, 2.65 ERA) vs Andy Pettite (3-4, 2.51 ERA).

Kevin Youkilis yells at Scott Proctor after almost getting hit in the headIn the first game of this 3-game series, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 9-5. Tim Wakefield had a rough outing, pitching 3.2 innings, allowed 5 hits, 8 runs (all earned), had 6 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Wakefield got the loss and is now 5-6 this season. For the Yankees Chien-Ming Wang pitched 5.2 innings, allowed 10 hits, 3 runs (all earned), had 2 walks, and 1 strikeout. Wang is now 4-4 this season. There were quite a few hit batters in this game. For the Red Sox, Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis were hit by pitches and for the Yankees, Josh Phelps, Alex Rodriguez, and Robinson Cano were hit by pitches. Lowell was taken out of the game later on and Youkilis almost charged the mound after Scott Proctor just missed his head with a high pitch. We'll see tomorrow if any of this continues. Tomorrow's pitching matchup will be Curt Schilling (5-2, 3.68 ERA) vs Mike Mussina (2-3, 5.86 ERA)

Over at the Red Sox vs Yankees blog, the Alex Rodriguez's bush league play post is getting a lot of attention. SportsFan In Da House just recently posted a post asking what kind of chant should Red Sox fans greet A-Rod with Friday night and on the weekend when he comes to the plate. Make sure to give your thoughts.

In game 2 on Saturday, the pitching matchup will be Curt Schilling (5-2, 3.68 ERA) vs Mike Mussina (2-3, 5.86 ERA). In game 3 on Sunday, the pitching matchup will be Josh Beckett (8-0, 2.65 ERA) vs Andy Pettite (3-4, 2.51 ERA). Will the Red Sox push the Yankees further down in the standings? Can they go any lower anyways? Or will the Yankees try and regain position in the standings. We'll see starting tomorrow night.

On Monday, May 21st, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 6-2 as Tim Wakefield struggled and Chien-Ming Wang pitched good enough to hold off the Red Sox hitters. Mussina pitched 6.2 innings, allowed 10 hits, 7 runs (all earned), had 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.

On Wednesday, May 23rd, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 8-3. Curt Schilling didn't have it and got roughed up by the Yankees hitters. Schilling pitched 6 innings, allowed 12 hits, 6 runs (5 runs were earned), and had 3 strikeouts. Andy Pettite wasn't perfect but only gave up one run to hold the Red Sox down in 7 innings. David Ortiz hits a monster home runToday the Red Sox made it 5 wins in 6 games against the Yankees so far this season with a 7-4 win today. The Red Sox started the scoring with Big Papi David Ortiz hitting a monster solo home run to right field. In the third inning, ex-Red Sox Doug Mientkiewicz hit a 3-run home run to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. In the 5th inning Alex Cora hit a 2-run home run to put the Red Sox back ahead 4-3. Later in the game Manny Ramirez hit a 2-run home run, and Derek Jeter hit a solo home run. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the 9th inning to close the game and save it for the Red Sox, his 8th save of the season. Julian Tavarez got the win and is now 1-2, he pitched 5 innings, allowed 3 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Chien-Ming Wang got the loss and is now 0-2, he pitched 6 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 3 walks, and 1 strikeout. The Red Sox are now 16-8 this season and in first place in the AL East, while the Yankees are 9-14 and last place in the AL East.

Well the Yankees were probably going to beat the Red Sox some time this year and it happened today with the Yankees winning 3-1. Yankees starter Jeff Karstens only threw 6 pitches before leaving the game with an injury. So Kei Igawa came in and saved the day for the Yankees as he pitched 6 scoreless innings, only allowing 2 hits, 4 walks, and 6 strikeouts. After Igawa, Yankees' pitchers Bruney, Farnsworth, and Rivera finished the game. Rivera finally got his first save of the season, but still has a 10.57 ERA. Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield pitched 5.1 innings, allowed 5 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 6 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Jorge Posada had the big hit of the game with a 2-run home run. Funny sight of the game had to be Alex Rodriguez, running like he was being chased by cops or something, as Mirabelli's bat flew towards third base after a swing. Run Forest, run!

The Red Sox and Yankees play again tomorrow at 1:05pm EST. The pitching matchup will be Julian Tavarez (0-2, 8.36 ERA) vs Chien-Ming Wang (0-1, 5.88 ERA).

The Boston Red Sox continued their domination over the New York Yankees this season by beating them 11-4 last night and Daisuke Matsuzaka got his second win against the Yankees this week. Kevin Youkilis started the scoring by hitting a 2-run home run in the 3rd inning off of Andy Pettite. In the 4th inning, the Yankees scored 4 runs to take the lead 4-2. In the 5th inning the Red Sox came back with 3 runs to make it 5-4 Red Sox. In the 6th inning, Julio Lugo hit his first home run of the season off of Scott Proctor. In the 8th inning, Lugo hit an RBI double. Yankees' pitching has really struggled this season. Even Mariano Rivera came into the 9th inning and allowed four runs on three hits and could only get one out. Matsuzaka is now 3-2, and pitched 6 innings, allowed 5 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 4 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Andy Pettite is now 1-1 and pitched 4.2 innings, allowed 6 hits, 5 runs (all earned), 5 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Youkilis and Lugo each had 3 RBIs with David Ortiz and Coco Crisp having 2 RBIs each as well.

The Red Sox are now 4-0 against the Yankees this season and later today they play each other at 3:30pm EST today on Fox television. The pitching matchup is Tim Wakefield (2-2, 2.08 ERA) vs Jeff Karstens (0-1, 14.54 ERA).

If you haven't heard about the whole Gary Thorne/bloody sock thing, well over at the Red Sox vs Yankees blog, SportsFan In Da House talks about it and gives his thoughts about it and Curt Schilling's thoughts as well.

Mike Lowell and David Ortiz celebrateThe Boston Red Sox got their third consecutive comeback win with a 7-6 victory Sunday night against the Yankees and swept them in their first series meeting this season. In the third inning, the Red Sox made some history by becoming the fifth team in major league history to hit four homers in a row. The guys who hit the home runs were: Manny Ramirez hitting his 2nd home run of the season, then J.D. Drew hit his 2nd home run of the season, then Mike Lowell hit his 2nd home run of the season, and then Jason Varitek hit his 2nd home run of the season. All four home runs were hit off of rookie pitcher Chase Wright. In the 7th inning, Lowell hit his second home run of the game, this time off of Scott Proctor, a 3-run home run to give the Red Sox the 7-5 lead. Jonathan Papelbon came into the 9th inning and closed the game out to get his 6th save of the season.

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 7 innings, allowed 8 hits, 6 runs (all earned), 1 walk, and had 7 strikeouts. He got the win and is now 2-2 this season. Wright pitched 3 innings, allowed 5 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Proctor got the loss and is 0-1. Another note: Alex Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 22 games with a single in the 8th inning.

Jonathan Papelbon celebrates after recording the save against the YankeesToday it was David Ortiz's turn for the home run and not Alex Rodriguez's turn. Ortiz hit a 2-run home run (Ortiz's 6th home run of the season) off of Jeff Karstens and had 4 RBIs in the game to help the Red Sox win the game 7-5. Josh Beckett pitched 6.2 innings, allowed 9 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Beckett is now 4-0. Papelbon pitched the 9th inning and got the save, his 5th save of the season. Karstens pitched 4.1 innings, allowed 9 hits, 7 runs (all earned), 2 walks, and 1 strikeout. Karstens got the loss and is now 0-1. The Red Sox now lead the season series 2-0 against the Yankees.

When Mariano Rivera went to the bullpen in the fifth inning, Red Sox fans in right field gave him a standing ovation. Remember last year I believe Red Sox fans gave him a standing ovation the day after he blew a save to the Red Sox as well.

Coco Crisp dives into the bullpen trying to catch an Alex Rodriguez home runThe Red Sox and Yankees started their season series against each other Friday night and the Red Sox made a surprising comeback against one of the best closers in Mariano Rivera, to win the game 7-6. Over the years, the Red Sox have had Rivera's number. This time it was Coco Crisp with the big hit against Rivera, hitting a two-run triple down the right-field line. Earlier in the game Crisp tried to rob an Alex Rodriguez home run but he ended up going into the bullpen (see picture on left). After Crisp's big hit, Cora singled to center field to score Crisp, which made the score 7-6. The Red Sox held onto the lead and Red Sox pitcher Hideki Okajima closed out the game to get the save.

Notes about the game: Curt Schilling started the game for the Red Sox and pitched 7 innings, allowed 8 hits, 5 runs (all 5 were earned), 1 walk, and had 5 strikeouts. Kyle Snyder got the win and is now 1-0. Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees and pitched 6.1 innings, allowed 8 hits, 2 runs (both were earned), 2 walks, and had 3 strikeouts. Rivera got the loss and is now 1-2 and recorded his second blown save of the season already. Jason Varitek hit his first home run of the season. Alex Rodriguez remains red hot and hit 2 home runs, and now has 12 home runs this season.

Spring training has been here and Manny Ramirez actually came to spring training earlier than when he first said he would be. That shocked everyone, including Red Sox fans. Talking about spring training, the Boston Herald site has a nice Red Sox photo gallery of spring training Red Sox fans will like viewing.

This off-season has been interesting for Red Sox fans with some moves and today may be the biggest move with their signing of Japanese ace pitcher Daisuke Matsuka to a six-year, $52 million contract. Daisuke Matsuka is 26-years old, a right-hander, who went 108-60 with a 2.95 ERA in eight seasons with the Seibu Lions. Read more about the deal on the BostonHerald.com story.
